Internet Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

Q: How fast is your internet service? What speed is right for me?
A: We currently offer service from 1Mbps to 7 Mbps speeds. For basic e-mail and web surfing, we suggest the 1Mbps speed. For emailing large photos, watching video online, or playing online games, 3Mbps may be more enjoyable. For watching HD video, large downloads, or multiple users at the same time, the 5Mbps or 7Mbps service will give you the best performance.

Q: Can I change speeds if I want?
A: Yes, you can change speeds at any time, just give us a call. We will make the change immediately and pro-rate the remaining portion of the month.

Q: Will my speeds slow down to a crawl in the evenings when everyone is online?
A: No, our network is designed to handle peak usage without slowing down. You can expect a good, fast internet experience at all times of the day.

Q: Is there a bandwidth (GB per month) usage limit?
A: No, unlike cellular air cards and satellite internet, our service allows unlimited usage. We will not charge you extra, slow you down to a crawl, or shut you off regardless of your usage.

Q: Am I going to be locked in to a long term contract?
A: No, we do not require a long term contract or commitment, you can sign up for month-to-month service. We do sometimes offer promotions that require a commitment, but these are optional.

Q: Your prices sound great, but what will it cost after taxes and fees?
A: We do not charge our users taxes or fees. The monthly service fee listed on the Pricing page is what you’ll actually pay. No surprises or funny business.

Q: How do I know if I will get a good signal?
A: Prior to installing your service, we will measure the signal strength at your home to determine what antennas and mounting will be required. We will not install service unless we are able to get a strong enough signal to ensure reliable, fast service under all conditions.

Q: What does the equipment look like?
A: Most homes within a few miles of our tower will require a small white antenna about 14″ diameter mounted on the wall, eave or roof. This looks similar to a small satellite TV dish. Homes further away may require a larger dish type antenna, or a roof tripod to raise the antenna up higher.

Q: How much range does your wireless router have for our laptops? Can we use them on the porch or in an outbuilding?
A: Our wireless routers will cover an average size house with typical frame construction when placed in a central location. Quite often this signal will be usable outside the home as well. Walls that have metal or masonry in them tend to block the signal more. We can test the range using your laptop before we install the service. Additional wireless routers can be added to increase range if required.

Q: Is the connection secure?
A: Yes, LakeNet service is as secure as any other internet service. Our equipment uses 256 bit encryption on all data sent over the wireless connection, so it cannot be intercepted.

Q: Is the service affected by rain or other weather conditions?
A: No, LakeNet service uses land-based towers only a few miles from your home, so weather does not affect the signal. It will not slow down or disconnect during rain like a satellite connection.

Q: Do I need a phone line?
A: No, LakeNet service does not need a phone line.

Q: How do I pay my bill?
A: We currently accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Checking EFT on our auto-pay system and personal check or money order by mail. Please mail payments to: LakeNet LLC, PO Box 275, Merrill, MI 48637.
